Air conditioning help can be hard to find if you do not know where to look or who can help. There are a number of common problems that can occur with any air conditioning system. One area that you will need to familiarize yourself with is the air conditioner disconnect box. This metal box is generally located outside of your home, near the air conditioner. This disconnect box is required by your local electric code.

Some things that you should be aware of concerning your air conditioner’s disconnect box are as follows. There are different types of disconnect boxes: switch type breakers, cartridge fuses or a pull-out type of disconnect that will either need to be replaced or reset. If your air conditioner has a switch type circuit breaker, the breaker can be reset by turning it to the off position before turning it back on. Cartridge type fuses are a little different as you will not be able to visually determine if the fuse is good or bad. It is a good idea to keep a couple of these fuses on hand so that you can replace them. Finally, pull-outs are a different case altogether. Check to see if the pull-out is firmly pushed in. If it is, you may need to replace the pull-out fuse.

Keep in mind that air conditioners use high voltage and can be very dangerous. If you are unsure about how to reset your disconnect box or just feel unsure about changing the fuse yourself, call in an electrician or air conditioner repair professional. Keep in mind that a blown fuse is only one of many problems that you can experience with your air conditioning system. Problems with the thermostat, blower motor and air conditioner compressor are all common and should be fixed by someone with the training to do the job correctly.
