This Saturday, November 26th, is the second annual Small Business Saturday, a great initiative that supports shopping at small, local businesses, with the hope of making a big, national difference.
Supporting the efforts of small businesses is one of eLocal’s tenets as a company, and we all want to get involved! After all, why not avoid the hordes of frantic Black Friday shoppers, and instead celebrate the individuality of your community by heading out a day later?
Sometimes we can underestimate the benefits of buying locally, but as we found when we explored the topic for our Why Buy Local infographic, shopping at small businesses is one of the most important steps we can make to support our local economies. For example, local businesses cut down on transportation costs, and are more active within their communities, donating a lot more to local causes than large chains.
With the holiday season beginning, what better way to start shopping than by getting friends and relatives locally produced, unique gifts, with money that will be reinvested in your community? And if Thanksgiving leftovers are making it hard to stray from home, you can always head over to Etsy, which has a handy search tool for local sellers, or other artisanal craft sites to support the businesses there.
Small business owners all over the country will be marking the day with specials and celebrations. If you’d like to get involved, you can go to Small Business Saturday’s Facebook page to learn more. You’ll be able to search for small businesses near you, and if you’re a business owner, you’ll also find free signage and other promotion materials.
