Whether you want to keep prowlers away or you live in the path of unpredictable tornadoes, installing a security door is an effective solution for protecting your home.

What Are Security Doors?

A security door is a reinforced entry door that's specifically designed to provide a higher level of protection than a standard door. These doors are suitable for both residential and commercial use, with styles that include front entry door, sliding glass door, garage door and screen door. Security doors are crafted with highly durable materials such as aluminum alloy, steel and laminated safety glass to help resist fire, human impact, gunshots, severe weather and many other issues.

How Do Security Doors Differ From Regular Doors?

While regular entry doors offer features ranging from double locks to impact glass, security doors are designed to protect homes and facilities against break-ins, bullets, extreme weather, fires and blasts. While each make and model offers its own features, many security doors are equipped with tamper-proof hinges and three-point locking mechanisms to help prevent forced entry. The sturdy, reinforced designs make security doors highly resistant to heavy winds and other severe weather conditions.

What Are the Different Types of Security Doors Available?

In addition to different styles, colors and designs, there are several types of security doors to choose from to meet your specific needs. Here's a breakdown of some of the most common types of security doors:

  • Ballistic doors: Ballistic doors, also called bulletproof doors, are designed with highly durable materials such as UL (Underwriter Laboratories) glass, aluminum alloy and aluminum tubing. While specific resistance levels can vary, these doors offer protection against bullets from high-velocity handguns and rifles.
  • Fire-rated doors: Crafted with heavy-duty materials such as gypsum or metal, fire-rated doors are commonly installed in commercial buildings, residential garages and apartment buildings. Depending on the specific door design and fire rating, fire-rated doors can prevent combustion for time frames ranging from 20 to 90 minutes when installed as directed.
  • Blast doors: Blast-resistant doors are most commonly utilized in commercial buildings, government buildings, chemical storage facilities and other facilities where high security is necessary. Designed with heavy-duty steel, blast doors offer protection against explosions, fine dust, vapor clouds and certain chemicals.
  • Hurricane doors: Hurricane-impact doors offer enhanced features such as impact-resistant door frames and durable laminated glass to protect homes from high-velocity impacts, heavy winds and flying projectiles during hurricanes and other storms. Because of their durable designs, hurricane doors also provide an added level of security against break-ins.
  • Security screen doors: Typically crafted with steel or aluminum alloy, security screen doors are installed or placed in front of standard doors to help prevent break-ins. While specific features can vary depending on the make and model, these doors are usually equipped with dead-bolt type locks and vertical bars for additional protection.
