When you’re involved in an accident, you may feel overwhelmed and confused. Between the damage to the vehicle and the shock of what just happened, it can be difficult to know what steps to take next. We’ve put together a simple checklist for you to follow after being involved in an accident to make sure that you handle everything properly.

1. Write down the details of the accident

When you have an accident, you need to record the details of what happened. Take photos of the scene, and get the names and phone numbers of witnesses. Write down the contact info of any witnesses and their contact information. If you can, write down the name of the other driver, their license plate number, and the name of their insurance company. Record the phone number of the police and/or the insurance company that provides after-sales service on your vehicle. Any information is good information. Your best course of action after being involved in an accident is to figure out what happened and never ever admit to being at fault.

2. Exchange information with other drivers involved

Exchange information with the other drivers, even for something minor or with no apparent injuries. This goes for any form of accident or “fender bender”. If you’re hit from behind or rear-ended, exchange information with the other driver. If you’re hit from the side, exchange information with both drivers. If you’re hit from the front, exchange information with all of the drivers.

3. Call your insurance company

After a car accident, you should get estimates for repair costs and contact your insurance company to file a claim. It’s important to work with your insurance company so they can take care of the paperwork and follow up with the other driver’s insurance company. Know your deductible or find it out from your insurance company so you have all the information when it comes time to submit the claim.

4. Contact a lawyer

Your next call needs to be to a lawyer, one experienced in car accidents and/or personal injury law. If you don’t know a lawyer off the top of your head or don’t know how to search for one, we can help you out. It’s important to make sure you know the car accident laws in your state, as they can vary. Car accident law is not the same as car vandalism or other cases involving damage to a car so make sure you’re contacting the right lawyer.

This leads us to our final piece of advice: if you’d like to get into contact with a car accident lawyer take a look at these top cities or search here for a lawyer in your area who can help you with your car accident case.
