A clogged toilet without a plunger is a very scary proposition indeed.

Trust me, I’ve been there. What do you do? Where do you turn?

There are good methods, there are bad methods and there are methods guaranteed to work. Which one you choose is up to you.

Let’s start with the bad method: chemical drain cleaners.

Chemical drain cleaners are sold under a number of different brand names but that doesn’t really matter, they are all dangerous for you and the environment. Nor are they particularly effective. They might clear a hair clog but not much else.

If they don’t clear the clog and you call a professional, make sure that you tell your plumber about the chemicals you used so that he or she can wear the proper safety equipment.

Hopefully I’ve talked you out of using a chemical drain cleaner. So what are the good ways?

A clogged toilet’s best friend is the plunger, but we’ve already established that you don’t have one of these. One solution that may work is simply pouring a bucket of hot water (about as warm as a cup of tea) down the drain. The more water the better but make sure that you have room in the toilet bowl for the sudden influx of water. The last thing that anyone wants to deal with is the clean up from an overflowing toilet.

There are methods that require the use of a drain snake, but if you don’t have a plunger, you likely won’t have a drain snake either. You can try using a wire hanger, but make sure that you use rubber gloves as this can be a rather disgusting method, assuming that you can actually reach the clog with the wire hanger.

A clogged toilet without the use of a plunger will have guaranteed success of getting unclogged if you put in a call to a licensed professional plumber. They have the knowledge and experience to get the job done right. And that can be a priceless experience.
